AMGO BP-9: designed backwards from the ceiling

Most two-post lifts are specified from the capacity down. The BP-9 reads as though it was specified from the roof up. Its columns are deliberately short — 108 inches overall, which is nine feet on the nose — and AMGO states the design target openly: it suits a ceiling height of 9 ft or higher. That is the number that decides whether a two-post lift can go into a normal domestic garage or a low commercial unit at all, and it is the number most listings bury below the capacity headline.

It gets there by being a base-plate lift. The hydraulic crossover runs along the floor inside a low steel plate between the columns instead of through a beam overhead, so nothing crosses above the vehicle and nothing has to clear your garage door track, your lighting or your roof structure. On top of that base sits a 9,000 lbs lift with symmetric three-stage arms on a 2.0HP 220V single-phase power unit, reaching height in 37 seconds.

Will It Fit?

With the ceiling problem largely answered, the questions that remain are floor and slab. Check every one of these before you order.

• Ceiling. 108 inches of column, and AMGO's own stated requirement of 9 ft or more. What limits the vehicle you can raise is your roof, not the lift — there is no beam across the top to strike.
• Rise. 72 inches at the pads, 76 inches with the extension adapters, and 69 inches of clearance under the arms. That under-arm figure tells you whether you can stand upright beneath a car.
• Floor width. Overall width is 131 7/8 inches, with 109 7/16 inches between the columns, plus working room down both sides.
• Drive-through. 98 15/16 inches between the carriages, which sets how wide a vehicle can be driven straight in.
• Low cars. Minimum pad height 3 1/2 inches.
• The plate on the floor. The trade for losing the overhead beam: a low steel base plate spans the bay, and everything crossing it — creeper, drain pan, transmission jack — goes over it.
• Slab and supply. Two columns anchored into sound, level concrete, and a 220V single-phase circuit for the 2.0HP power unit.

Measuring your ceiling, your floor and your slab is the buyer's responsibility, and concrete that will not hold an anchor is the most common reason an installation stops on the day. If you do not know what your slab is, find out before you order rather than after the crate arrives.

Where the stored figures disagree, and which ones we used

Two of the rounded fields held against this product do not line up with the factory sheet, and we would rather show you that than tidy it away. One records a drive-through of 9 ft against a measured 98 15/16 inches, another a column spacing of 8.25 ft against a measured 109 7/16 inches — the two look to have been entered the wrong way round. A third puts lifting height at 11 ft, which cannot be reconciled with 108 inch columns and 72 inches at the pads. Every figure in the tables below comes from the factory sheet, not from the rounded fields.

Symmetric arms: what you gain and what you give up

The BP-9 uses four symmetric three-stage retractable arms — all four the same, with the vehicle sitting centred between the columns. It is worth understanding what that choice buys, because the alternative geometry is genuinely better at some things.

Symmetric placement puts the vehicle's weight evenly across the two columns, which suits longer and heavier vehicles: pickups, vans and body-on-frame trucks sit with the load split rather than rotated behind the posts. It also makes arm setting simpler, with no front-versus-rear arm to keep track of. What you give up is door clearance on shorter cars, where a centred vehicle sits closer to the columns. If your bay is mostly light trucks, symmetric is the right answer; if it is mostly small hatchbacks whose doors you need open at height, look at an asymmetric arm set instead.

The three stages are about reach rather than strength: they let the arms come in short enough for a compact car and go out far enough for a long-wheelbase pickup, so the pads land on the manufacturer's lift points rather than near them. Automatic arm restraints engage as the lift rises, locking each arm in the position you set it so nothing can be knocked out of place with a vehicle up.

Two locks, one release, and no electrics in the chain

The BP-9 carries a dual safety lock structure released from a single point, by hand, unlocking both columns from one side. The vehicle is therefore held on mechanical steel and not on hydraulic pressure — pressure raises the load, the locks hold it, and nothing should go under the car until the lift is set down onto a lock. A manual single-point release also means one person lowers the lift from one position, with no solenoid or electrical interlock in the chain to fail quietly.

The carriages ride on self-lubricating UHMW polyethylene sliders, whose value shows up in year five rather than year one because they do not depend on a greasing schedule. Aero sync cables keep both carriages rising together instead of one leading and the vehicle sitting cocked on its pads, and a detachable toe guard and tool tray are included.

That is missing information rather than a statement by the manufacturer either way, and saying so is more useful to you than an implication. In a private garage the question rarely arises. It does arise for some commercial insurance policies, for fleet and municipal operations, and for jurisdictions whose code names a specific listing. Shipping and delivery

This ships by freight truck to addresses in the lower 48 states, with freight quoted live at checkout against your own address, so the figure you see is a current carrier rate rather than a stale estimate. It arrives crated on a standard trailer and getting it to the ground is the receiver's job — a forklift, a machine, or a plan and some help. Where none of those exist, collecting from the carrier's local terminal is usually easier, because the terminal already has the equipment. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, applied at checkout when you select it.

Inspect before you sign: crushed corners, bent steel, shifted banding, any trace of oil. Write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there, and photograph it. A clean signature is the carrier's evidence that the load arrived undamaged.

AMGO publishes a written warranty covering this product and we hold the document rather than a summary — ask us for the current copy before ordering if the terms matter to your decision. One warning applies to every hydraulic lift whoever built it: if something fails, do not open the power unit, a cylinder or a lock mechanism before a claim is raised. A disassembled component is normally treated as a modified one, and that is the quickest way to lose cover that would otherwise have been paid.
