Atlas WB49-2: what the 2D in the name actually costs you

Being straight about this is more useful than a page of adjectives. A wheel balancer needs three inputs before it calculates anything: how far the rim is from the machine, how big the rim is, and how wide the rim is. This machine measures the first two for you. The inner gauge swings in, touches the rim, and offset and diameter arrive on the display without a keystroke. Width is entered by hand. That is the definition of 2D, and it is the whole difference between this model and the PRO version of the same balancer, which carries a second gauge that reads width automatically.

For most buyers that is the right trade. Reading a rim width off a caliper takes a few seconds and the calipers are in the box. It becomes the wrong trade when the machine is shared, when volume is high, or when the person on it changes through the week — because a mistyped width does not produce an error, it produces a confident correction for a wheel that does not exist. If that describes your bay, buy the PRO instead and we will say so.

Atlas also sells the width measuring gauge as a separate accessory, so a 2D machine can be upgraded later rather than replaced. Ask us about it when you order.

Everything else here is the premium platform

Nothing else is cut. The display is the raised LED type, set where a standing operator reads it without stooping — the same arrangement as the WB41 — on a chassis with a genuinely large weight tray, which is the difference between weights living in a tray and weights living on the floor. Split-weight mode divides one correction into two smaller weights placed behind the spokes, so an alloy wheel a customer paid a lot for does not come back wearing lead on the face. An automatic lamp lights the inside of the rim at the moment the weight goes on, which is the moment you cannot see what you are doing.

Will It Fit — your wheels, and your shop

  • Rims from 10 inches to 32 inches, rim widths from 1 1/2 inches to 20 inches, and an assembled tyre up to 39 inches across.
  • Centre bore. Four cones ship with the machine and between them they cover centre holes from 1.75 inches to 5.18 inches. Take a measurement off your most awkward wheel and compare it with those two numbers before ordering. Larger bores and heavily offset wheels need the Light Truck Adapter Kit — a larger cone and a spacer — which is bought separately and is not in this crate.
  • Weight. Rated to 150 lbs per wheel assembly. The original copy on this page draws a distinction most manufacturers avoid drawing, and it is worth keeping: a shaft that will hold a 150 lbs assembly and a machine that will balance one accurately are two different claims, and the industry prints them as one.
  • Shaft 40mm, standard cone and adapter fitment.
  • Power and floor. 110 volt, 1/4 HP — one ordinary outlet. No anchoring into the floor, so it can go into a leased bay or a space you may want back.
  • Delivery. 400 lbs crated. Read the shipping notes below before choosing a delivery address.

Checking your wheels, your outlet and your access route against those figures is the buyer's responsibility. Send us the hardest wheel you handle and we will confirm it in writing.

Error codes instead of an engineer's invoice

The WB49-2 self-diagnoses and self-calibrates, and when something is wrong it displays a code instead of simply producing worse readings. That is a bigger deal for an independent shop than the feature list makes it sound. A balancer quietly drifting out of calibration presents as a run of customers coming back with vibration complaints, and the cause is usually identified by a visiting technician several days and one invoice later. A code on the screen turns a proportion of those faults into something the shop reads, checks and fixes the same morning.

Automation you will use every wheel

Auto-positioning parks the wheel at the weight position rather than leaving it to be nudged round. Lowering the hood starts the cycle; raising it stops it. There is an automatic brake with a pedal override. Spin speed is 150 RPM, resolution is 1 gram, and weight position resolves to 1.4 degrees. Static and dynamic modes are both available, plus a rapid optimisation routine for the wheel that will not come right — the one that tells you to rotate the tyre on the rim rather than pile on more weight. Grams or ounces, millimetres or inches, switchable, which matters if your technicians trained in different countries.

Perfect For

  • An independent workshop adding wheel balancing without a floor installation.
  • A tyre bay with one regular operator — the 2D trade-off costs least where the same person uses the machine every day.
  • Alloy-wheel work, for the split-weight mode and the rim lamp.
  • A buyer who wants a path forward: the width gauge can be added later.

What is in the box

Per the feature list on this page: a plastic quick-release nut, four centering cones, wheel weight pliers and measuring calipers — the calipers being the tool the 2D machine actually needs, since width is the number you supply. Not included: the width measuring gauge, the Light Truck Adapter Kit, and wheel weights. Atlas states replacement parts and wear items are kept in stock.

Warranty, and a discrepancy worth knowing before you buy

This page publishes 1 year, parts only, and that is the term we sell it on. There is a second account in circulation: at least one other retailer of this machine publishes the same one year parts-only cover with an additional carve-out limiting wear items to a shorter period. We are not going to reconcile those two for you by picking one, because we cannot verify the second from Atlas documentation we hold, and a warranty term guessed at is worse than a warranty term looked up.

If the wear-item position matters to your purchase — and on a balancer, where cones, covers and pliers are the parts that get replaced, it reasonably might — ask us in writing before you order and we will get the current terms from Atlas. Whatever the term turns out to be, do not take the machine apart before making a claim; a unit that has been opened is the usual reason a good claim is refused.

Certification, stated plainly

No third-party safety listing or conformity marking is claimed for this balancer in any of our product data, and we will not imply one. If an insurer, a franchise agreement or a local authority requires a specific listing for equipment in your bay, ask us in writing before ordering and we will put the question to Atlas.

Shipping and delivery

This is a freight shipment inside the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout rather than printed here, because freight rates move. Two things decide whether delivery day goes well. First, unloading is yours to arrange: a freight truck will not lift the crate off the trailer for you, so you need a forklift, a skid steer or a comparable machine at the delivery address, or you take the shipment at the carrier terminal instead. Tell us which before it ships. Second, inspect before you sign. Walk the crate, look for crushed corners, punctures, shifted banding and oil marks, and write anything you find on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves. A signed clean receipt is the carrier's proof that the freight arrived undamaged, and a concealed-damage claim raised afterwards is a far harder argument than three words written on the paperwork. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee. Warehouse pickup is available at our stocking locations if you would rather collect it.
