Schulz 7580VL30X-1: 7.5 HP of two-stage air on an ordinary single-phase supply

The reason to look at this machine rather than the smaller L-Series units around it is the motor. It is a 7.5 HP two-stage compressor that runs on 230V 1-phase power. Most two-stage pumps in this size class expect a three-phase service, which for an independent shop or a serious home workshop is a conversation with the utility company rather than an afternoon with an electrician. This one is not, and that single fact is what usually decides the purchase.

The second thing worth knowing sits on the specification sheet and nowhere in the manufacturer's sales copy: this unit is listed with an after-cooler fitted as standard. Why the single-phase rating is the headline

Air demand is easy to underestimate. One air ratchet is nothing; two technicians on a die grinder and a sander with a blow gun going is a different machine entirely. The usual upgrade path out of a small garage compressor runs straight into an electrical wall, because the motors that feed that kind of demand are normally sold three-phase only. A 230V 1-phase circuit, by contrast, is the same class of supply that already feeds a welder or a two-post lift power unit — a wiring job rather than a service upgrade, which is the difference between installing a compressor this month and budgeting for one next year.

Schulz does not publish an amp draw or a recommended breaker size for this model. Both fields on its own data sheet read consult a certified electrician, and that is the honest answer: the correct breaker depends on the run length, the conductor, the panel and your local code. Do not size it from a number on a web page, ours included.

The after-cooler, and what it actually does for you

Air leaves a two-stage pump hot, and hot air holds water vapour. As it cools in the tank and then in your pipework, that vapour condenses — which is why shops blow water through spray guns and watch air tools rust from the inside.

An after-cooler sits between pump and tank and drops the discharge temperature before the air is stored, so more moisture falls out at the tank where a drain deals with it, and less travels down the line to the tool. It is not a dryer and does not replace one; this unit's specification lists no air dryer. What it does is move the condensation problem to the one place in the system designed to collect it, which for finishing work or anything air-fed is worth the difference on its own.

Will It Fit?

This is a vertical machine, so it buys floor space with height. Check all four of these against your building before you order.

• Floor footprint: 33.8 inches long by 25.2 inches wide. That is roughly the plan area of a domestic washing machine, but see the weight below before you assume it goes anywhere.
• Height: 78.7 inches. Measure to the lowest obstruction over the intended spot, not to the roof apex — a garage door track, a light fitting or a duct run is what usually stops it. You also need working room above for filter and belt access.
• Weight: 600 lbs on that small footprint, which is a concentrated load. Schulz publishes no minimum floor thickness or concrete rating for this model. A sound shop slab is normally fine; a wooden mezzanine or a thin residential garage pad deserves a look before delivery day, not after.
• Power: 230V, 1-phase, with a mounted and prewired magnetic starter, so the electrician terminates a supply rather than building a control panel.

Confirming the ceiling, the floor and the circuit is the buyer's responsibility. A compressor that does not fit the room, or that the panel cannot feed, is not a warranty matter.

The L-Series pump: cast iron, low RPM, deep fins

The pump decides whether this is a ten-year machine or a three-year one, and the L-Series is built around keeping it cool and slow. The block is solid cast iron with an in-line cylinder layout and deeper cooling fins than the entry-grade aluminium pumps this buyer is usually shown. Iron conducts heat away and damps vibration; fins put that heat into the air. A cooler pump oxidises its oil more slowly, and clean oil is most of what bearing life comes down to.

Underneath that are oversized main bearings and a double-supported crankshaft, with Swedish steel valves and CNC-machined components. The crankshaft support is the detail worth understanding: a shaft carried at both ends deflects less under load than one carried at one end, so bearings and rings see less side loading every revolution. Drive is by notched belts inside an enclosed guard, splash lubricated, with a sight glass on the crankcase — and no low-oil shut-off, which makes checking that glass part of your routine rather than a convenience.

The data sheet for this compressor lists one certification: ASME, covering the air tank and the safety valve. That is a pressure-vessel standard and it is the one that matters most on a machine storing 80 gallons of air at working pressure, because the tank is the component whose failure is not recoverable.

Be precise about what it does not cover: a pressure-vessel certification is not an electrical safety listing, and not a third-party approval of the machine as a whole. Plan the unload before the truck arrives. A crated 600 lb machine is a forklift or pallet-jack job, not a two-person lift. If you have no dock or forklift, take terminal pickup and collect with a trailer, or choose residential delivery, which carries a fee at checkout.
