Most compressor pages sell you the pump. This one is worth buying on the service schedule. Schulz's IC-TECH® pump design integrates the two compression stages and, on the manufacturer's stated maintenance schedule, doubles the oil change interval to every 300 hours. Over a decade in a working shop that is not a footnote — it is dozens of oil changes that do not happen, each one an hour of a technician's time, a jug of compressor oil, and a machine standing idle while the crankcase drains.
What supports that interval is the rest of the pump: Swedish steel valve plates, CNC-machined internal components, a forced-air cooling cover over the pump, and corrosion-resistant coatings on a machine whose whole job produces water. Underneath it, the specification is a 5 HP, two-stage, solid cast iron pump on an 80-gallon horizontal tank, delivering 20 CFM at 175 PSI on a 230V, 3-Phase supply.
Will it fit?
The tank lies down, so this is a long, low machine rather than a tall one: 52" of length, 48" of width, and 42" of height. That height is the useful number if you are siting it beneath a mezzanine, a storage deck, a duct run or a low garage ceiling. Add clearance to all three figures — the cooling cover needs moving air, and the drain and gauges need to be reachable without shifting the machine.
The supply is 230V three-phase, and that is a hard requirement, not a preference. Three-phase cannot be created at the panel; the building either has it or it does not. If yours does not, ask us for the single-phase version of this machine rather than trying to make this one work. Amp draw and breaker size are not published here because our specification sheet for the model does not state them — it directs you to a certified electrician, and sizing the circuit, disconnect and wire run is the buyer's responsibility. Have whoever wires it confirm pump rotation on first start, too: a three-phase motor will run happily in the wrong direction if the legs land the wrong way round, and a compressor pump turning backwards does damage rather than work.
Why the maintenance interval is the real cost
The purchase price of a shop compressor is the smallest part of what it costs you. Electricity is the largest, and servicing is the one you notice, because it happens on a Tuesday when the machine is needed. Two design choices on this unit attack that directly.
The first is the two-stage layout itself. Compressing in two steps means neither cylinder works as hard, so neither runs as hot, and heat is what ages oil, hardens seals and glazes bores. A cooler pump is a pump whose oil stays serviceable longer — which is precisely what makes a 300-hour interval defensible rather than optimistic.
The second is direct coupling. The pump bolts straight to the motor: no belt to glaze and slip, no pulleys to align, no tension to check, no guard to remove first. Belt wear on a shop compressor is insidious, costing output quietly for months before anything actually fails. Deleting the belt deletes the failure and the inspection alike.
Valves, machining and cooling
Valve plates are the component that usually gives up first in a hard-worked compressor. They open and shut on every stroke, they run hot, and when they flutter or crack the pump keeps running while quietly losing delivery. Swedish steel is a materials choice aimed squarely at that: better-tempered valve stock holds its shape at temperature and delays the failure.
CNC-machined internals matter for a related reason. Tighter, more repeatable tolerances mean less blow-by past the rings, which means less of the compressed air leaking back where it came from, which means the pump spends less time running to deliver the same air. The forced-air cooling cover over the pump ties the whole argument together — it keeps head temperature down under continuous duty, which is when this machine is at its most stressed and when a badly cooled pump starts eating itself.
Storage pressure and why 175 PSI is the number to look at
An 80-gallon tank charged to 175 PSI stores considerably more usable air than the same tank at a lower cut-out pressure. That reserve is what separates a compressor you barely hear from one that runs almost continuously behind a technician on an impact gun. Combined with a 20 CFM delivery, it is enough for sustained air-tool work by more than one person, or for a single heavy consumer such as a sander used in long passes.

One number we are not printing
There is no shipping weight in the table above, and that is deliberate. The weight recorded against this three-phase configuration is substantially lighter than the weight recorded against the otherwise identical single-phase machine — same tank, same pump, same dimensions — and both cannot be right. Since weight is what you plan your unloading around and what freight is rated on, we would rather tell you that than publish a figure we do not trust. Certification, stated plainly
ASME is the certification our data records for this machine, covering the pressure vessel. It is the only one we will state, because it is the only one claimed in our product data.
