Schulz 580VL20X-1: 20 CFM at 175 PSI — and the 1/2-inch outlet that decides whether you ever feel it

This is the L-Series 5 HP: a solid cast iron two-stage pump on an 80-gallon upright tank, running on 230V 1-phase power, rated at 20 CFM at 175 PSI. Those are good numbers for a shop compressor, and the honest thing to tell you is that most buyers never see them at the tool — not because the machine underdelivers, but because of what happens between the tank and the hose. The 1/2-inch tank outlet is where that story starts, and it is the part of the purchase almost nobody plans.

Flow, pressure and the pipe in between

Two specifications describe a compressor and they are not interchangeable. 175 PSI is the pressure the tank will hold — stored energy, available in a burst. 20 CFM is the volume the pump keeps replacing — sustained work, available all day. Pressure gets a stubborn wheel nut moving. Flow is what lets you keep sanding for an hour.

Now the part that catches people. Every fitting, hose and length of pipe between tank and tool costs pressure while air is moving, and that loss grows sharply as the pipe narrows. A machine capable of 20 CFM plumbed through a long thin line behaves at the tool like a much smaller compressor, and the owner concludes they bought the wrong machine when they built the wrong pipe.

So treat the 1/2-inch outlet as a starting point, not the specification of your system. Run the main generously, keep it short and straight, take drops off the top of the main rather than the bottom so condensate does not run down them, and keep the restrictive items — quick couplers, coil hose — close to the tool. That is a weekend of pipe for a fraction of what the compressor cost.

The L-Series pump

The pump here is an L-Series cast iron two-stage unit, belt driven. Cast iron is chosen for two reasons that have nothing to do with marketing: it conducts heat away from the cylinder walls far better than the aluminium used in lighter pumps, and its mass damps the vibration a reciprocating machine generates every time a piston reverses. Heat is what breaks down oil and glazes rings; vibration is what loosens fittings and fatigues brackets. A heavy iron block is the standard answer to both.

Supporting it are oversized main bearings, Swedish steel valves and CNC-machined components. The valves are worth a moment: they open and close on every stroke, which over a working life is a number with a lot of zeros in it, and valve failure is the single most common reason a compressor stops making its rated flow. Steel of a known grade in a machined seat is what keeps that from being a two-year event.

Lubrication is a splash system with an oil sight glass on the crankcase, so checking the level is a glance rather than a job — worth doing, because there is no low-oil shut-off to catch you. The drive uses notched belts inside an enclosed guard, which keeps sleeves and fingers away from the flywheel and stops the belts throwing debris.

Will It Fit?

• Floor: 32 inches by 25 inches. Upright, so it takes a corner or a spot at the end of a bench rather than a wall run. Keep one side walkable for the belt guard and, more importantly, the tank drain.
• Height: 78 inches. Measure to the lowest thing over the intended position — a beam, a duct, a garage door track — and leave head room above for filter and belt access.
• Weight: 515 lbs on a compact upright base, so the load is concentrated. Schulz publishes no minimum concrete thickness or slab rating for this model and none is invented here. A poured shop floor handles it without thought; a suspended floor or a thin domestic pad is worth a professional look before delivery is booked.
• Power: 230V, 1-phase, with a magnetic starter mounted and prewired at the factory, so the electrician terminates a supply rather than building control gear. The amp draw and recommended breaker fields on the Schulz sheet both read consult a certified electrician, which is the correct answer — those depend on your conductor, run length and local code.

Confirming the ceiling, the floor and the circuit before ordering is the buyer's responsibility.

Two stages, one tank, fewer starts

A two-stage pump compresses air in a large cylinder, hands it to a smaller one and compresses it again. That is how it reaches 175 PSI at all, and it does the work with less heat per stage than a single-stage machine attempting the same job in one pass.

The payoff is not really the top figure — it is the gap. A high cut-out pressure over 80 gallons gives a wide band between the pressure that starts the motor and the pressure that stops it, so the compressor runs in long stretches and then rests, instead of switching on and off every couple of minutes. Short-cycling is what wears out contactors, motor windings and pumps. Volume and pressure together are the fix, and this is a machine specified with both.

One certification is on record for this compressor: ASME, covering the air receiver and its safety valve. It is a pressure-vessel standard, and on a tank holding 80 gallons at 175 PSI it is the one that genuinely matters, because a receiver failure has no recoverable version.

What it does not do is worth saying out loud rather than leaving to inference. It is not an electrical safety listing, and it does not certify the machine as an assembly or its control gear. If an insurer, an inspector or a company standard requires a particular listing for fixed shop equipment, ask us before you order and we will confirm in writing what this unit carries.

Work out the unload before ordering. Crated, this is a 515 lb pallet: a forklift or pallet jack on a firm surface, or a trailer and a run to the freight terminal. The driver brings it to the back of the truck and no further. Residential delivery is available and carries a fee, shown at checkout before payment. Inspect the crate alongside the driver and write any damage on the bill of lading before signing — signing clean makes a later claim extremely difficult.
