Quincy 553D80VCA23M 5 HP 80-Gallon Two-Stage Air Compressor, 230V 3-Phase

Ask anyone who repairs shop compressors what fails first and you will not hear "the motor". You will hear valves. In a reciprocating pump the reed valves open and close on every single stroke, which over a working life is a number with a lot of zeros on it, and the way a reed normally dies is fatigue at the root after being bent too far, too often. This machine answers that directly: stainless steel reed valves fitted with valve bumpers, so the reed is physically stopped before it over-travels.

Around that sits a two-stage cast-iron pump with aluminium heads, belt driven at 942 RPM, on a vertical 80-gallon receiver, with a fin-and-tube intercooler, a mounted air-cooled aftercooler, graphite gaskets and a magnetic starter. It is wound for 230V, 3-phase supply.

What a valve bumper actually does

A reed valve is a thin spring-steel flap. Air pressure lifts it off its seat to let the charge through, and it springs back to close. The forces that lift it do not care about the reed’s fatigue limit, so at high flow the reed can be pushed past the curvature it was designed for. Do that a few million times and it cracks where it is clamped — not where it looks stressed.

A bumper is a stop that sets the maximum lift. The reed opens as far as it needs to and no further, so the bending stress at the root stays inside the design envelope for the whole service life instead of only at moderate flow. Making the reed itself from stainless steel is the other half of the answer: valves live in hot, wet, oil-laden air, and corrosion pitting is a stress raiser that starts the same crack from the other direction.

Graphite cylinder and head gaskets belong to the same part of the machine and the same argument. They hold the joint across the temperature swings that two-stage compression produces without relaxing, which is what keeps the valve plate clamped evenly — an unevenly clamped plate is one that lets a reed seat crooked.

Two stages, and heat taken out twice

The low-pressure cylinder makes the first compression, the high-efficiency fin-and-tube intercooler removes the heat that compression created, and the high-pressure cylinder finishes the job on cooler, denser air. Maximum rated pressure is 175 PSI. Doing it in two steps with cooling in between is less work than doing it in one, and it keeps the discharge temperature down, which is what the valves and the oil actually care about.

After the pump, a mounted air-cooled aftercooler cools the discharge again before the air enters the tank. That is what makes water condense inside the receiver where it can be drained, instead of downstream in the pipework and the tools.

Will It Fit?

  • Footprint: 37" by 24", plus access room on the pump side.
  • Height: 74" overall, with clearance above for pump removal at service time.
  • Weight: 690 lbs dry, carried high on a narrow vertical base. Level slab, anchored down.
  • Supply: 230V, 3-phase. Set at the factory by the motor and starter, and not changeable on site.
  • Circuit: sized by a certified electrician. We do not publish a breaker figure for this model, because the honest answer depends on the cable run and the code where you are.
  • Connection: 3/4" tank outlet into a header that slopes away from the machine.

Preparing the site is the buyer’s responsibility: verifying that 230V three-phase service is genuinely available where the machine will stand, that the slab will carry the load and take anchors, that the room is ventilated, and that the electrical work is permitted and inspected where your jurisdiction requires it.

Perfect For

  • Busy service shops that cycle their compressor hard all day and want the wear items specified properly.
  • Fabrication and metalwork, where hot, humid discharge air is the normal operating condition.
  • Buyers on their second compressor, who have already replaced a valve plate once and would rather not again.
  • Buildings on 230V three-phase, the most common commercial three-phase supply.

What is in the Box

Delivered air volume and running current are absent from that table on purpose. Our catalogue records both as bare numbers with no unit against them, and we will read you the manufacturer’s published figures rather than restate something we cannot evidence.

Certification, stated plainly

The receiver is built to the North American pressure-vessel code and the machine carries a CSA mark. Our supplier record also references a North American third-party electrical listing, which we are not printing because the entry is not clean enough to stand behind. If your insurer, your plant safety programme or your local inspector requires a named listing mark, ask us and we will confirm what appears on the data plate before you order.

Two details worth a phone call

Published information about this build differs on two points, and both are set out here in full. On lubrication, the manufacturer’s feature list describes a fully pressure-lubricated package with a gerotor positive-displacement oil pump; the structured specification field on this page records the oil system as splash lubricated. On the tank drain, the feature list and the detailed specification block both record an electronic automatic tank drain, while a summary field records none. If either point decides your purchase, ask us to check the as-shipped configuration before you commit — we will get it confirmed with Quincy.

Shipping and delivery

Freight only, within the lower 48 states, crated on a skid. Arrange a forklift or a dock before delivery day, because the carrier brings it to the truck and stops there. Terminal pickup is available if collecting it yourself is easier.

A residential delivery address carries a residential fee — let us know at order time if the address has no commercial receiving.

Inspect the freight before the driver leaves. Photograph the crate, look at the skid and the sheet metal, and write any damage on the bill of lading before signing. Once it is signed clean, a claim becomes very hard to pursue.

Warranty

Quincy provides a 1-year factory warranty for consumer and commercial use. It extends to the 3-year "No Bull" warranty, covering on-site service and labour, when the EWK-4 Maintenance Kit is bought at the time of purchase and the unit is registered with the manufacturer.

One rule on warranty work, and it decides more claims than anything else: call before you take anything apart. An opened pump cannot be diagnosed after the event, and pre-emptive disassembly is the most common reason a genuine claim is refused.
