Quincy 471CS80VCB — 7.5 HP, 80-Gallon Vertical Two-Stage Air Compressor, 230V Single Phase

Most workshops that want a 7.5 HP two-stage compressor discover they need a three-phase supply to have one. This machine is the exception: a full 7.5 HP industrial pump on 230V single-phase power, built in the USA, standing on a vertical 80-gallon receiver and rated for a 100% duty cycle. If your building has no three-phase service and no realistic prospect of getting it, this is how you buy into the same pump the three-phase machines use.

There is a price for that, and it is electrical rather than financial. Read the next section before you order.

The 80 Amp circuit is the real decision

Quincy specifies an 80 Amp breaker for this compressor. That is a very substantial single-phase circuit — larger than most domestic services can spare, and larger than a good many small commercial panels have room for. Single-phase motors draw considerably more current than three-phase motors doing identical work, which is exactly why the three-phase versions exist; on single-phase you pay for that convenience in copper and in panel capacity.

So the order of operations is: talk to your electrician first, confirm the panel can carry an 80 Amp circuit alongside everything else you run, and only then order the compressor. We say this before the specifications rather than after because it is the thing that most often turns a straightforward delivery into a machine sitting on a pallet for three weeks. A magnetic starter is supplied with the unit, so the contactor and overload protection are part of the package rather than an extra line on the electrician's quote.

Made in the USA, and what the pump is made of

The manufacturer states that this compressor is built in the USA. The pump is the cast iron QT-7.5 belt-drive unit with an aluminum head — iron for the cylinders where rigidity and wear resistance matter, aluminum on top where getting heat out matters. Two cylinders, cast iron, held to tight tolerances, with industrial-class bearings behind the pistons and graphite gaskets that keep sealing when everything is hot.

Two details are worth calling out because they are maintenance decisions rather than marketing. The reed valves are stainless steel with controlled lift, which resists the corrosion that condensate brings and stops a valve flexing itself to failure. And the connecting rods are two-piece, which means a rod bearing can be dealt with without dismantling the whole bottom end — a repairability choice you appreciate in year eight, not in week one.

Why vertical, and what it costs you

The receiver stands on end. In floor-plan terms that is the whole argument: the machine occupies roughly 37" by 24" — about the area of a shipping pallet — and gives you back the long strip of wall a horizontal tank would have taken. In a shop where every square foot is a bay, a bench or a parts rack, that is not a small thing.

What you pay is height. It stands about 74" tall, so before you commit to a corner, look up and check for ducting, lighting, sprinkler heads, mezzanine edges and the track of a roll-up door. You also want room above the machine to reach the oil fill and pull the belt guard, not merely enough to stand it upright. And because 720 lbs sits fairly high on a small base, the floor needs to be flat, sound concrete and the machine needs to be levelled and secured properly rather than simply parked.

Two stages, an intercooler, and a motor that runs cool

The pump compresses in two steps. A large cylinder does the first stage, a high-efficiency finned tube intercooler between the stages removes the heat that compression created, and a smaller cylinder takes the cooled, denser air the rest of the way to 175 PSI. Cooling between stages is not a luxury: compressing hot air wastes energy and cooks valves, and the intercooler is what makes a two-stage machine both efficient and long-lived at high pressure.

The heavy balanced cast iron flywheel does two jobs at once — it smooths out the pulses from a two-cylinder pump so the belt and bearings live an easier life, and its fan casting drives cooling air across the intercooler and heads. The motor is a heavy-duty industrial unit with capacitor start and built-in thermal overload protection, running at a lower speed than a light-duty compressor would, which is why it consumes less and lasts longer for the same work.

Not fitted on this build, and worth budgeting for separately: air dryer, aftercooler, electronic drain valve and pump low-oil shutdown are all absent, as are site piping, hose and point-of-use regulation. The tank outlet is 3/4".

Specifications

On the last row: our specification feed carries an airflow number for this pump, but for this build it arrives with no unit attached, and we will not print a rating we cannot source cleanly. Ask and we will get the delivered air at pressure from the manufacturer in writing before you order.

Certification, stated plainly

The current product information states that the electrical components carry UL and CSA approvals, and the specification sheet lists ASME for the pressure vessel alongside them. Those cover the electrics and the tank respectively. They are not a statement about your installation, and they do not answer the question your insurer or your local authority may ask about a pressure vessel of this size on your premises. If a specific listing or inspection is a condition of your cover, verify it against the machine's data plate before purchase; we will send you whatever the manufacturer publishes so you can.

Warranty

A 1-year factory warranty applies, extending to a 3-year "No Bull" warranty under Quincy's own programme and on Quincy's own conditions, which include registering the unit. We will confirm in writing exactly what this model requires before you order — the conditions are the part buyers usually meet by accident or miss by accident. If a fault develops, leave the pump assembled until the claim is agreed: a dismantled pump cannot be inspected and the claim rarely survives it.

Freight and delivery

This ships as freight on a pallet to the lower 48 states. At 720 lbs you will want a forklift or a pallet jack at the receiving end; if that is not available, terminal pickup with a trailer is a perfectly normal choice and we will arrange it. Residential delivery is offered and carries a residential fee. Freight is quoted live at checkout, so the price shown is current rather than an estimate baked into a page.

Do not sign until you have looked. Check the tank, the pump, the belt guard, the motor and the pallet, and write anything you find on the bill of lading with the driver present. A clean signature makes a later damage claim extremely difficult.
