Quincy 453D80VCB46M QT MAX — 5 HP Two-Stage, 80 Gallon Vertical, 460V 3-Phase

If you already own a refrigerated air dryer, or you know you are going to need one, this is the version of the QT MAX to look at. It leaves the factory with an air-cooled aftercooler in place, which means a large share of the moisture is knocked out of the air at the machine before it ever reaches your dryer. A dryer fed by a compressor with no aftercooler spends its whole capacity on bulk water; a dryer fed by this one spends it on the last of the vapour, which is what it was built to remove. The compressor is, in the plainest sense, dryer-ready.

The rest of the build is 460V 3-Phase, a 5 HP motor, a splash lubricated cast iron two-stage pump rated at 17.2 CFM at 175 PSI, and an 80 gallon vertical ASME receiver with a factory magnetic starter.

Two things to confirm before you order

The part number. Two codes are published for this machine: the title and specification block read 453D80VCB46M; the description and the page's own web address read 253D80VCB46M. A three-phase model code encodes the voltage, so it is worth pinning down. Send us the number on your paperwork and we will confirm the build and the supply with the manufacturer first.

The tank drain. Published details differ: the detailed specification block records an electronic drain valve as fitted and the feature list states an automatic tank drain, while a separate specification field in the same record says there is none. On a machine specified around moisture handling, that is not a footnote. If it is part of your reason for buying, ask us and we will get it confirmed in writing before the order goes out.

Voltage, space and access

This build is wired for 460V 3-Phase. That suits plants and larger workshops already distributing at that level, and it is not something to convert in the field on the basis of an internet forum. If your board runs at a lower three-phase voltage, tell us and we will move you to the correct model. Our record gives no breaker size, only instructions to consult a certified electrician, which at this voltage is worth doing before delivery rather than after.

Physically the machine takes 37" by 24" of floor and stands 74" tall, weighing 680 lb. Allow height above it for the pump and the oil fill, and think about the route in — thresholds, headers and soft ground cause more delivery problems than the final position ever does. Confirming height, access, floor loading and the electrical supply remains the buyer's responsibility.

Water is the enemy, and where you remove it matters

Air leaves a compressor pump hot and holding all the moisture it can carry. Every foot of pipe it travels, it cools; every degree it cools, some of that moisture becomes liquid water sitting in the low points of your system. That water rusts pipework from the inside, ruins finish work, carries oil mist into places it should not go, and destroys air tools slowly enough that people blame the tools.

An aftercooler intercepts the problem at source. Sitting between the pump and the receiver, it drops the air temperature most of the way back to ambient before the tank, so the condensate forms in the receiver where it can be drained rather than in a hose forty feet away. It does not replace a dryer — nothing except a dryer gives you genuinely dry air — but it removes the crude bulk of the problem and lets everything downstream do the job it was specified for.

Cast iron, cooled twice

Separately from the aftercooler there is a finned intercooler between the two compression stages. Its job is thermal efficiency rather than moisture: the second stage compresses cooler, denser air, so it does less work and runs at a lower discharge temperature. The pump itself is cast iron with aluminium heads, turning slowly by design, with two-piece connecting rods and a low oil shutdown to protect it. Slow rotation and good cooling together are what sit behind the manufacturer's rating of more than 50,000 hours of pump life.

Certification, stated plainly

The claims our data supports are an ASME receiver plus UL and CSA on the electrical components, and US manufacture as stated in the feature list. We will not go further than the record. Specifically, we hold no third-party safety listing for the machine as a completed assembly, which is a different document from a component approval and covers different ground. If a plant standard or an insurer asks for one, raise it before you order and we will put the question to the manufacturer.

Shipping and Delivery

Freight to the lower 48. Your rate is generated live at checkout from your address rather than estimated, so there are no surprises after the fact. Someone will need to get 680 lb off the truck: a forklift, a dock, or a terminal collection you arrange yourself. Residential addresses carry a residential fee, and terminal pickup is frequently the faster route.

Inspect on arrival, with the driver present. Look at the crate, the tank seam, the gauges and the starter enclosure, and note any damage on the bill of lading before signing it. A clean signed receipt is, to a carrier, proof that nothing was wrong.

Warranty

A 1 year factory warranty applies to parts and labour, and Quincy's 3-Year "No Bull" extension is available on the manufacturer's usual terms — the correct maintenance kit purchased with the machine and prompt registration of the unit. Ask us to confirm the exact requirements for this model while you are ordering, since the extension cannot be arranged retrospectively.

If something does fail, contact us before anyone dismantles anything. A stripped pump is almost always an unclaimable pump, no matter how obvious the fault turned out to be.
