The number worth starting with on this machine is 700 RPM. That is how fast the cast iron pump turns, and it is the slowest figure in this part of the Chicago Pneumatic range. Everything people like about this compressor — how long it lasts, how much noise it makes, how much oil ends up downstream — follows from it.

Piston speed is what wears a reciprocating compressor out. Rings rub, bores go oval, valves fatigue, and all three happen per stroke rather than per hour. A pump that produces its output at 700 RPM has taken a different route to the same delivery than a fast, light pump: bigger bores, more mass, slower motion. An 80 gallon receiver behind an 18 CFM pump is a deliberately generous ratio — it means the pump is not switching on and off constantly during intermittent work, and short bursts of heavy demand come out of stored air rather than out of the motor's duty cycle. Cycling is wear, and a big tank is the simplest way to buy less of it.
