QRS10HP-125: the 125 psi build of Chicago Pneumatic's 10 HP screw compressor

The number after the horsepower in this model code is the working pressure, and it is the single most important thing on the page. This is the 125 psi version of the 10 HP QRS airend: it delivers 40 CFM at 125 psi and unloads at 125 psi, sitting on a 132 gallon horizontal receiver. Chicago Pneumatic builds the range in Italy through Atlas Copco, and the airend is rated for 100% duty.

Pressure choice is not a detail buyers should skip past, so we will deal with it before the features. Compressed-air tools carry a rated inlet pressure, and most automotive air tooling is happy well under 125 psi at the tool. What catches people out is everything between the compressor and the tool: a long header, undersized pipe, a coiled hose, a quick-coupler and a regulator all take a bite out of the pressure the tool actually sees. If you have equipment that specifically wants a higher supply pressure at the machine — some tyre changers, some presses, some pneumatic actuators on production equipment — check its data plate against 125 psi before you choose this build rather than the higher-pressure version of the same compressor. If everything in the shop is ordinary air tooling, 125 psi is not a compromise; it is simply the correct specification.

Why the lower-pressure build is often the smarter buy

There is a real engineering reason this variant exists. A compressor spends energy making pressure, and a screw airend asked for less of it returns more free air for the same horsepower. Running a shop at a pressure it actually needs, rather than at the highest number available, is one of the few efficiency measures in a compressed-air system that costs nothing to implement — it lowers the energy per cubic foot and it lowers the leak rate, because leaks flow harder at higher pressure. Shops that measure their air costs generally end up specifying pressure downward, not upward. If your tooling is content at 125 psi, this build is the one to buy.

Continuous duty, in practice

The 100% duty rating means the machine has no mandated rest period. That is not marketing shorthand; it is the design difference between a rotary screw and a reciprocating compressor. A piston unit is rated to run for a fraction of each hour, and when a shop exceeds that rating the machine runs hot and its service life collapses. A screw compressor is sized by demand alone. In a shop with four or five people pulling air through the middle of the day, that is the difference between a compressor that is a maintenance item and one that is furniture.

The receiver, the moisture, and the drain nobody checks

The 132 gallon horizontal tank is not there to smooth pulses — a screw airend already delivers continuously. It buffers simultaneous demand, so pressure at the far end of the shop does not sag while the machine comes on load, and it gives water a cool place to fall out of the air stream. That second job is the one that goes wrong in practice: a receiver drain that is never opened turns the tank into a reservoir of water that eventually reaches your tools and your paint work. Put the drain on a schedule, or fit an automatic one. There is no dryer in this package, so any spray or instrument air needs drying and filtration downstream of the receiver.

Controls, sound and servicing

Control is load / no-load with a timed shutdown — the machine unloads when demand stops and powers down after an idle interval instead of short-cycling. The control panel carries UL, cUL and CSA approval in a NEMA 1 enclosure. Sound is quoted at 66 dBA, low enough to live in the shop rather than in a separate room. The oil filter and the air/oil separator are spin-on elements, which is why a routine service on this machine is a filter change rather than a strip-down, and the assembly is vibration isolated at the tank so the airend's vibration stays out of the receiver shell and the slab.

Will it fit, and will it run?

Electrical supply is the gate: 208-230/460V, 3-phase, through a TEFC motor. If your building is single phase this is not the machine, and that is a discussion for your electrician before the order goes in. Physically, allow for about 76.2 inches of length and roughly 589 lbs of weight, plus service clearance on the panel and cooler sides — airflow is not optional, and a compressor wedged into a corner will trip on temperature in high summer. The listing also stores an overall width and height, but neither carries a unit, so we will not repeat them as though we knew what they measured; ask us and we will send the dimensioned drawing out of the manual. Checking clearances, supply, ventilation and floor loading before delivery is the buyer's responsibility.

The claim this data supports is narrow and we will keep it that way: the control panel is UL, cUL and CSA approved and the enclosure is NEMA 1. That covers the electrical panel. It says nothing about registration of the pressure vessel, and this page makes no such claim about the receiver either way. Some insurers, some jurisdictions and most formal plant safety programmes want vessel paperwork on file for a tank of this capacity. Shipping and delivery

Freight only, on a pallet, to the lower 48 states, with the cost quoted live at checkout so it reflects the lane on the day rather than an estimate from last season. You need to be able to unload roughly 589 lbs — a forklift or a dock — or to collect from the carrier's terminal, which is a perfectly normal choice for a shop without loading facilities. Residential delivery carries a residential fee. Before you sign anything, walk around the pallet: check the tank shell for impact marks, the shroud for crushing, and the pallet for a fall. Write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there, because that note is the difference between a claim that is paid and one that is argued.

Warranty

The standard term is 1 year. A 5 year term is available where the machine is commissioned by a factory-authorized start-up, typically charged at $350. Book that into the installation schedule rather than treating it as an afterthought, because it is what puts the longer term in place. As with every compressor we supply: do not disassemble the airend, the separator housing or the control panel before a claim is opened — a machine that has already been opened is extremely difficult to claim on.
