Champion VRV7-8 Vertical 80-Gallon Three-Phase Shop Air Compressor

The VRV7-8 is the three-phase, tank-mounted member of Champion's RV-Series, and the reason to look at it ahead of a generic 80-gallon compressor is what is already bolted to it when it arrives. It ships with a mounted NEMA 1 starter and a California Code Compliant receiver — a specification that decides whether a compressor can legally be installed in some jurisdictions at all, and one that is normally an extra line on a quote rather than something already on the machine.

This is a vertical unit, so its footprint is the tank's footprint. It is aimed at a shop that already has three-phase service at the panel and wants a compressor that can be set, piped and wired without a shopping list of add-ons.

The receiver specification is the part worth reading twice

Two claims sit on this tank and they do different jobs. The receiver is ASME coded, the pressure-vessel standard almost every commercial insurer and building inspector expects on a tank that lives in an occupied building. Separately, it is built as California Code Compliant. If your shop is in a jurisdiction that enforces its own receiver rules, that second line is the difference between a compressor you can commission and one that sits on a pallet while paperwork is sorted out. Ask your inspector what they require before you buy anything — it is the opinion that costs you a week if it is wrong.

The mounted NEMA 1 starter matters for a plainer reason: it is a general-purpose enclosure sized and fitted at the factory for this motor. Sourcing a starter separately afterwards is how installations end up delayed, mismatched, or protected by something the motor manufacturer never intended.

Loadless starting, and what a slower motor buys you

The VRV7-8 turns at 1,800 RPM. A compressor pump that runs at half the speed of a direct-drive unit does the same work with fewer strokes, which is the whole argument for a belt-driven layout: lower piston speed, lower operating temperature and a pump that is not being asked to live at its limit every time the pressure switch closes. The enclosed belt guard is what makes an exposed rotating drive acceptable in a bay where people walk past it all day.

Loadless starting is the companion feature. The pump is unloaded at the moment the motor starts, so the motor accelerates against almost nothing and only picks up the compression load once it is at speed. That means a gentler inrush and far less stress on the starter contacts, which are the parts that usually fail first on a compressor that cycles all day. Control is a tank-mounted simplex start/stop pressure switch — no controller, nothing to fail that you cannot diagnose with a screwdriver — and an intake filter and silencer keeps grinding dust and abrasive out of the cylinder bores.

Will It Fit?

Plan the installation before the truck arrives; a compressor of this weight is not something to reposition afterwards.

• Footprint. Overall length is 35.3". The tank is vertical, so the machine occupies a tall, narrow space — keep clear air on all sides for cooling and for access to the belt guard.
• Weight. Estimated shipping weight is 710 lbs, wanting sound, level concrete; a vertical tank on an uneven slab loads its feet unequally.
• Air connection. The tank outlet is 3/4". Size shop piping to match or exceed it — undersized pipe throttles a compressor at exactly the moment you need the air.
• Power. Three phase, offered in more than one service voltage, so the voltage on your order has to match the voltage at your panel. Confirm it with us in writing first.
• Pressure. Maximum working pressure is 175 PSI. Anything downstream — regulators, hose, couplers, filtration — needs to be rated for it.

Site preparation, the electrical supply, the disconnect and the shop piping are the buyer's responsibility, and the install has to be signed off by whoever is doing your electrical work.

Perfect For

• An established independent shop with three-phase service that runs impact tools, a tyre machine and a paint or blast operation off one compressor.
• A light commercial or production environment where the compressor runs most of the day and starter wear is a real maintenance cost.
• A shop in a jurisdiction with its own receiver rules, where a compliant receiver is the specification that decides the purchase.

What Comes on the Unit

Air treatment is not part of the package — the specification records no air dryer and no electronic drain valve, so if you need dry air at the tool, plan a dryer and a filter into the piping.

Three things to confirm with us before you order

Published figures for this model differ in a few places. Each one is set out below with its source and what to confirm with us before you order.

• Motor rating. The product title and page carry 7.5 HP; a separate specification field on the same record reads 8 HP. Those are not the same motor and we will not guess which is right for your order — ask us and we will confirm it against the manufacturer's sheet before anything ships.
• Air delivery. The headline figure is 26 CFM. The manufacturer's own specification list quotes delivery at two different working pressures, and those figures are not identical to the headline. If your tooling is sized close to the limit, ask us for the delivery figure at the pressure you actually run.
• Service voltage. Several three-phase voltages are offered on this model. We will confirm the one on your order against your supply.
• Overall width and height. Both are recorded in our data as bare numbers with no unit attached, so we have left them off rather than publish a measurement we cannot stand behind. Ask and we will pull them from the manufacturer's drawing.

Certification and compliance, honestly

What this compressor claims is the ASME coding on the receiver and the California-compliant receiver construction — real, specific and checkable. Be equally clear about what is not claimed: our product data records no third-party electrical safety listing for the assembled machine, and a pressure-vessel code is a different document with a different scope. If your insurer, your electrical inspector or a fleet compliance policy requires a particular listing mark on the complete unit, verify that requirement and ask us to confirm before you order rather than after.

Shipping and delivery

This compressor ships as freight to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout rather than baked into the page, so the number you see is the number for your address on the day. A residential delivery carries a fee.

You must be able to take the unit off the truck — a forklift, a loading dock or an equipment mover — or collect it from the carrier's terminal. Walk around the crate and the tank before you sign anything. If you see a dent, a scrape or a shifted pallet, write it on the delivery paperwork first; that note is what makes a freight claim straightforward, and a signature without one makes it very hard.
