Champion HRV7-12: a compressor that arrives wired rather than assembled

Plenty of shop compressors are sold as a pump, a motor and a tank, with the starter and the controls left as somebody else's problem. The HRV7-12 is not one of them. It is a packaged simplex unit: the magnetic NEMA 1 starter comes mounted as standard, the control is a tank-mounted start/stop pressure switch, the intake filter and silencer are fitted, the drive is behind an enclosed belt guard, and the receiver is ASME coded. The job on site is a connection.

Behind that package sits the RV30 pump driven by a 7.5 HP motor at 1,800 RPM, feeding a 120-gallon receiver and rated at 24 CFM to 175 PSI. The whole machine weighs 882 lbs.

What "packaged" is worth in practice

The saving is not really the price of a starter. It is the sequence of small decisions that a half-supplied compressor forces on you at the worst moment: matching a starter to the motor's full-load current, selecting an enclosure rating for a dusty shop, wiring and testing the control circuit, and then explaining all of it to an inspector who would rather see a factory-assembled machine. A packaged unit answers those questions before the crate is opened.

The NEMA 1 enclosure is the right thing to notice here. It is a general-purpose indoor rating, which is the correct choice for a normal shop and the wrong one for a wash bay, a wet plant room or an outdoor lean-to. If the compressor is not going to live in a dry indoor space, tell us before you order and we will talk the enclosure rating through with you first.

Sizing 24 CFM honestly

This is the smaller end of the RV range, and it is worth being blunt about what it suits. 24 CFM covers a one to two-bay shop with intermittent air-tool work — impacts, blow guns, tyre inflation, a ratchet, occasional grinding. It does not comfortably cover two continuous-draw tools running side by side all day, because a sander or a die grinder will take air for as long as somebody holds the trigger.

The 120-gallon receiver is what keeps the modest number workable. Reserve buys you the bursts: the tank carries a sudden demand that would flatten a smaller vessel, the pump catches up between them, and the motor starts less often. Starting is where compressors wear, and loadless starting — the head is vented so the motor accelerates unloaded — is on this unit for the same reason.

Will It Fit? Read this section before you order

Published dimensions for this model differ. Confirm the footprint with us before you plan a bay around it.

  • The tank orientation is contested. One field in our catalogue records this unit as a horizontal-tank machine. The overall length it also records, 35.3", is close to the base dimensions of the upright models in this same series and nothing like the long runs of the horizontal ones. The two figures describe different machines, so ask us to confirm the tank orientation and the true footprint against the factory drawing before you commit to a wall or a corner — we will take it from the Champion drawing.
  • Height. Our data holds an overall height as a bare number with no unit written next to it, so no clearance figure appears here. It is part of the same question above and we will confirm it at the same time.
  • Supply. Listed for 200 / 230 / 460 / 575V three-phase, fixed when the order is placed. Agree it with us and your electrician first.
  • Handling. 882 lbs crated — a forklift or pallet-jack job, on a flat, sound slab.
  • Air connection. 3/4" tank outlet.
  • Your responsibility. Slab, supply, permits, offload and final placement are the buyer's to arrange.

Perfect For

  • One and two-bay repair shops with intermittent rather than continuous air demand.
  • Dry indoor installations suited to a general-purpose enclosure.
  • Buyers replacing a small compressor who want the reserve of a large tank without a large motor.
  • Sites that want a factory-assembled machine to present to an inspector.

Three figures to confirm before you order

Published figures for this model differ in three places. Each is set out below with its source.

  • Motor size. The model designation and this product's title give 7.5 HP; a separate motor field in our catalogue reads 8 HP. Those are different motors and the difference reaches your breaker and conductor sizing, so both figures appear here with their source. Ask us to confirm the rating in writing before anything is specified.
  • Air delivery. Our catalogue rates this unit at 24 CFM. The factory specification list instead gives values at 125 PSIG and at 175 PSIG, both without a unit written beside them. Separately, the upright model built on the same pump, the same motor and the same factory delivery values is rated higher in our catalogue than this one — a gap too large to be a rounding difference between two identical machines.
  • Tank orientation and footprint — as set out above.

None of these makes the compressor a worse machine. The factory sheet is the authority on all three, and we will confirm any of them with Champion in writing before you buy.

Certification, stated plainly

The claims this model's own feature list makes are an ASME coded receiver, with base-mount versions of the package excluded, and compliance with California code. Beyond those, our data claims no third-party safety listing for the packaged machine and none is claimed here. Where an insurer, a fleet policy or a local inspector requires a specific listing on shop pressure equipment, ask us to confirm in writing what accompanies this unit before you order.

Shipping and delivery

Freight to the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout because carrier rates move. Getting 882 lbs off a truck needs a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack and a level approach; failing that, have it held at the carrier's terminal for collection. Residential addresses carry a residential fee. Look the shipment over before you sign — receiver, pump, motor and starter enclosure — and record any damage on the delivery paperwork at the time you find it rather than afterwards.

Warranty

Our record links to the store's warranty claims page and states no term, so no period of cover is printed here — ask us for the current manufacturer terms in writing before you order. And whatever they are: report a fault before anything is dismantled. A compressor already taken apart is the hardest claim there is to support.
