Champion HR5D-12 5 HP Two-Stage Reciprocating Air Compressor

Look at the pairing on this machine and something stands out: a 5 HP pump sitting on a 120 gallon receiver. That is a lot of tank for that horsepower, and it is not an accident. A compressor is only wearing out while it is running, and the size of the receiver is what decides how much of the day it gets to stand still.

The HR5D-12 is a heavy duty two stage, splash lubricated reciprocating unit rated 5 HP with an air delivery of 34 CFM, on a horizontal 120 gallon tank. It is the shape of compressor a small shop should want: modest running cost, long off-cycles, and a stored volume of air big enough to cover the jobs that briefly need more than the pump makes.

Why the tank size matters more than the badge on the pump

Air demand in a workshop is spiky. An impact gun rattling off wheel nuts, a blast cabinet in short bursts, a die grinder for ninety seconds: these draw far more than the average, then stop. Undersize the receiver and the pump chases every one of those spikes, cutting in and out all day. Each of those starts is an inrush on the motor and a heat cycle on the pump, and short-cycling is what turns a ten year compressor into a five year one.

A 120 gallon receiver absorbs the spikes. The stored air covers the burst, the pump refills at its own pace, and it does that far less often. Three things follow. Run hours drop, and with them electricity and wear. The pump gets time to cool between cycles, which keeps oil viscosity and ring life where they should be. And the air arriving at the tool is drier, because air that has been sitting in a big tank has had time to drop its moisture into the bottom of it, where the drain can get at it, instead of carrying it down the line.

Two stage compression, cooled between stages

Squeeze air all the way in one cylinder and you get heat, and heat is what carries water forward and thins the oil film. The HR5D-12 does it in two stages with an intercooler in between: partial compression, a pass through the finned cooler to shed heat, then a second, smaller cylinder to finish the job.

The rest of the pump backs that up. Multi-finned cylinders and an integral cylinder head move heat out of the casting. Reliable high flow disc valves let the cylinders breathe instead of throttling at the top end. Oversized main bearings and a balanced crankshaft keep the assembly composed when the machine is loaded, and a centrifugal unloader vents the pump at rest so the motor starts against no load rather than against tank pressure. An oil level sight glass is fitted where someone will actually look at it, which is the whole point of a sight glass on a splash-lubricated pump.

Will it fit, and what does it need?

Allow for a machine roughly 75 inches long weighing about 980 lbs. That is a pallet-and-forklift item, and the floor beneath it should be solid and level rather than simply flat. Leave breathing room around the flywheel, belt guard and intercooler. A reciprocating compressor pressed into a corner recirculates its own hot air and quietly undoes the cooling the pump was designed around.

Power is three phase, and our record lists 208 V and 230 V for this unit. A magnetic starter is included. Confirm the available supply and breaker with your electrician before ordering, because a phase mismatch is a return, not an adjustment.

The receiver has a 3/4 inch service outlet. There is no integrated air dryer and no electronic drain valve on this machine, so if you need genuinely dry air at the tool, plan a dryer and a drain as separate purchases rather than assuming they are in the crate. Overall width and overall height are recorded in our data without units, so they are not printed here; ask and we will read them off the factory drawing.

Perfect for

  • One and two bay independent shops that want long compressor life more than they want a big number on the motor.
  • Home and hobby workshops of serious size, where quiet running and long off-cycles matter because you are standing next to it.
  • Tyre bays and quick-service operations with spiky, burst-heavy demand that a large receiver is made for.
  • Farm and estate workshops needing stored air for occasional heavy jobs rather than continuous production draw.

What is included

  • Heavy duty two stage, splash lubricated compressor pump
  • 120 gallon horizontal air receiver
  • Multi-finned cylinders, integral cylinder head, inter-stage intercooler
  • Reliable high flow disc valves, oversized main bearings, balanced crankshaft
  • Oil level sight glass and centrifugal unloader for loadless starting
  • Magnetic starter

Options offered on this pump family

  • Electric fuel pump
  • Canvas cover, for engine driven models
  • Heavy duty vibration isolators
  • 9 gallon standalone fuel tank
  • 5 gallon standalone fuel tank

None of these is standard equipment on this listing, and the fuel-related items belong to the engine driven configurations of the same pump family rather than to the electric unit described by the specifications above. If you want any of them, or you want the engine driven build, ask us to confirm it in writing before ordering.

The pressure rating is missing from this page on purpose

You will notice there is no maximum working pressure in the table. Our record holds a figure for it, but not in a form that establishes its unit, and a pressure specification with an ambiguous unit is worse than no specification at all when someone is sizing regulators, hose and downstream equipment around it. The pump speed is in the same state. Ask us and we will read both from the factory data sheet for this exact model, in writing, before you buy.

Certification, stated honestly

Our product record for the HR5D-12 does not include a third-party safety listing or a pressure vessel code stamp for the receiver. That is a description of our data rather than a verdict on the machine. If your insurer, your local inspector or a workplace safety audit requires a particular listing or stamp, name it to us and we will verify it against the factory documentation before you commit. We are not going to put a mark on this page that our records cannot support.

Shipping and delivery

This ships freight, within the contiguous United States. At roughly 980 lbs crated it is far outside parcel service, and freight is priced live at checkout for the address you enter rather than smoothed into a flat national figure.

The customer unloads. Have a forklift rated above the shipping weight standing by, or take terminal pickup and collect it with your own gear. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee, which the checkout quote shows before payment. Inspect the pallet while the driver is still there. Bent tank feet, a cracked guard, torn wrap, a broken gauge or oil on the deck all go on the bill of lading in writing, with photographs to match. A clean signature is read as confirmation the machine arrived undamaged, and it is hard to walk back.

Warranty and support

Terms and the claim process live on our warranty claims page. One rule saves more claims than any other: do not take anything apart first. A head, a valve plate or a starter that has already been opened is the most common reason a legitimate claim is turned down. Report the fault, let it be documented, then act on instruction. For the withheld figures, the voltage, or a view on whether 34 CFM covers your tool list, call, text or chat with us on 866-774-7743.
