Description
-BendPak VMP-10120V-603: a 10 HP compressor whose pump turns at 745 RPM
The number that explains this machine is not the horsepower. It is the pump speed. The motor on this V-Max Elite 10120V-603 runs at 1,740 RPM, and the belt drive gears that down so the pump itself turns at 745 RPM — well under half of motor speed. Everything buyers like about this compressor follows from that one decision: a 75 dB noise rating you can hold a conversation next to, lower running temperatures, and wear spread over far fewer strokes per hour for the same air delivered.
It is a two-stage, oil-lubricated reciprocating compressor with a four-cylinder pump cast in 100% iron, feeding a 120-Gallon vertical ASME tank, rated at 41 CFM at 175 PSI, on 208-230V (or 460V) 3-Phase, 60 Hz power. It is sized for a shop that runs air all day — body repair, tyre work, production and fleet — not for intermittent hobby use.
Will It Fit? Power first, then floor
Air compressors are rarely returned because they were too big. They are returned because the building could not feed them.
- Three-phase supply is mandatory. This model is 3-Phase only. It cannot be run from a single-phase panel without a phase converter, and a converter is a design decision to make before you buy rather than after.
- Two voltages, one machine. It is specified for 208-230V or 460V service, so it drops into either. The amp draw and the recommended breaker size are different for each, and both figures are on the manufacturer's spec sheet — hand them to a licensed electrician and let them size the circuit and the conductors.
- Frequency. 60 Hz.
- Floor and ceiling. This is a vertical tank, so it buys back floor space by going up. Allow clearance around it for the cooling airflow the design depends on, and headroom to service the pump from above.
- Weight. 1,002 lbs. (454 kg). Confirm the slab and the route into the building before delivery day, and remember a vertical tank has to be stood up, not dragged.
Siting, ventilation, the electrical supply and any local permits are the customer's responsibility. We will happily check a figure against the factory documentation before you order; we will not tell you your building is suitable.
Two stages, and why the second one exists
A single-stage compressor squeezes air once and sends it to the tank. A two-stage machine compresses it in a large cylinder, cools it in an intercooler, then compresses the cooled air again in a smaller cylinder. Cooling between the stages is the whole trick: cooler air is denser, so the second stage does less work for the same delivered pressure, and the machine reaches 175 PSI without running the pump hot. That is why two-stage compressors dominate in shops that need pressure continuously rather than in bursts.
This one adds an air-cooled after-cooler downstream of the second stage. Its job is water. Compressed air carries moisture, and moisture is what ruins air tools, blows spray jobs and rusts a tank from the inside. Dropping the air temperature before it enters the tank condenses much of that water out where you can drain it, instead of delivering it to the far end of your air line.
The pump: cast iron, four cylinders, disc valves
The pump is a "V-4" finned-cylinder layout with 360° cooling and splash lubrication. Three details are worth understanding before you compare it with an aluminium-block machine.
Cast iron does not warp. Aluminium cylinders with pressed-in sleeves change shape under sustained heat; cast iron heads and cylinders hold their geometry, which is why they survive duty cycles that cook lighter pumps.
Disc valves are serviceable in place. The valves on this pump are reached without pulling the cylinder head or dismantling the compressor piping. On a machine that will need valve service eventually, that is hours of shop downtime you never spend.
Splash lubrication has fewer things to fail. No oil pump, no oil lines — the crank throws oil where it is needed. A sight glass on the cast iron reservoir lets you check the level at a glance rather than on a schedule you will forget.
Vibration, and the four pads that deal with it
A four-cylinder pump on a balanced flywheel and a counterbalanced crankshaft is already close to vibration-free, but the machine still ships with a set of four half-inch elastomer pads. They matter more than they sound: a large vertical compressor bolted rigidly to a slab transmits its pulse through the whole building, and the pads are what stop that reaching the office wall. The compound is chosen to resist ageing, compression set, water and oil, so it does not turn to biscuit after two years next to a machine that is warm and occasionally oily.
Perfect For
- Automotive and body shops running multiple bays. 41 CFM at 175 PSI supports several air tools without the pump living on the pressure switch.
- Production and light industrial use. Continuous duty cycle, cast iron pump, ASME tank.
- Fleet and municipal workshops. Three-phase service is usually already in the building.
- Anyone replacing a screaming single-stage unit. The 75 dB rating is the reason this is on your list.
It is not for a home garage on single-phase service. If that is you, look at the single-phase machines in this range instead.

| Overall dimensions | The manufacturer's data gives two sets that do not reconcile. One listing reads 49" by 1,016 mm by 2,108 mm (1,257 mm on the long side); a separate listing on the same sheet reads 1,118 mm wide by 2,007 mm deep by 762 mm high. A 762 mm height is not credible for a 120-Gallon vertical tank, so at least one row is mislabelled. Certification
The manufacturer's specification for this model states certification to UL, CSA and ASME. The ASME rating is the one that matters most day to day, because it covers the pressure vessel and the safety valve — the parts that hold and release 175 PSI. Some jurisdictions and insurers require an ASME-stamped tank for a compressor in commercial use; this one carries that rating. If your inspector needs the paperwork rather than the claim, ask and we will get it to you.
