BelAire 418V Iron Series 5 HP 80-Gallon Two-Stage Compressor — 689 RPM, 1-Phase

689 RPM. That is the number that explains the 418V and separates it from every other 5 HP compressor on this site. Its solid cast iron two-stage pump turns slowly — barely faster than an idling engine — and a slow pump is a long-lived pump. Fewer strokes per hour on the rings, the bearings and the valves; less heat to shed; less noise in the building; and a duty cycle you can lean on rather than nurse.

The 418V is the Iron Series interpretation of a workshop compressor: heavier than it needs to be, turning more slowly than it needs to, on ordinary single-phase power at 208 Volt or 230 Volt. It weighs 580 lbs, which is the visible cost of a pump built to run at 689 RPM and still deliver 18 CFM at 100 PSI.

Slow-turning, and why it is worth paying for

Two compressor pumps can produce identical air and wear out on completely different schedules. Wear accumulates with cycles, not with hours on the clock, so the pump turning at half the speed of its rival does half the wearing over the same working life. Everything follows from that: ring life, bearing life, valve life and the interval before efficiency starts quietly falling away.

The second consequence is heat. Speed generates heat faster than a flywheel and a set of fins can carry it away, and heat is what oxidises the oil, glazes the bores and hardens the valve plates. A pump running at 689 RPM stays much closer to the temperature its designer had in mind.

The third is noise, and it is the one you notice on day one. A slow compressor is a machine you can hold a conversation next to. Over years in a small building that changes how willingly people use it.

The price of all this is mass and bulk: a slow pump has to be physically larger to shift the same air, which is exactly why this unit is heavier than faster-spinning compressors of the same rating.

Solid cast iron, and automotive-style internals

The pump is cast iron throughout rather than an aluminium casting with iron liners pressed into it. Cast iron is heavier, damps vibration better and tolerates heat and grit in a way lighter constructions do not. Inside, BelAire uses automotive-style rod bearings and wrist pins — the reciprocating assembly is built along the lines of an engine bottom end rather than as a sealed consumable, which is the difference between a pump that can be serviced and a pump that gets replaced.

Drive is by belt, lubrication is splash, and there is an oil sight glass so the weekly check is a glance rather than a job. The belt guard is fully enclosed.

Will it fit, and will your shop feed it?

Vertical tank: 72" tall, on a footprint of about 37" by 24". Allow clearance above for the outlet plumbing and access to the pressure switch, and a little around the sides so the guard, the sight glass and the manual drain stay reachable. The floor must be level and solid — 580 lbs on four feet is enough to find any weakness in a slab, and a machine that rocks slowly works its own mounts loose.

Electrically it asks for 208 Volt or 230 Volt 1-phase service and can be wired for either, with the magnetic starter already fitted. BelAire publishes neither a breaker size nor an amp draw and asks that both be confirmed by a certified electrician, which is right: sizing depends on the run length and your local code. Have that conversation before delivery day rather than after.

Output, and what it means in the bay

The 418V delivers 18 CFM at 100 PSI and 16 CFM at 175 PSI from an 80 gallon vertical ASME tank with a 3/4" outlet. Two-stage compression is what keeps that second figure so close to the first: the air is compressed in two steps with heat shed between them, so high pressure is a normal operating state rather than a strain.

In practice that is enough to keep an impact gun, a ratchet and a blow gun in continuous use, or to run a sander for extended periods without the motor cycling every few seconds. BelAire recommends the CPXHT25 dryer alongside it; that is not included and not required, but it is the right thing to budget for if you spray.

Perfect For

  • Shops that keep equipment for decades — the slow pump and iron construction are a longevity argument, not a performance one.
  • Buildings with only single-phase service and no appetite for a utility upgrade.
  • Noise-sensitive premises — workshops attached to offices, showrooms or homes.
  • Restoration, fabrication and general repair with sustained daily air demand.

What’s in the Box

Certification, stated plainly

The tank is ASME certified and carries a safety valve. That is what the 418V’s data claims, and on a vessel holding 175 PSI it is the claim with the most consequence.

Beyond the tank, this listing claims no third-party safety listing for the assembled machine. We will not imply one, because the difference is a real one: a manufacturer declaring its own product compliant is not the same instrument as an independent body listing it, and there are insurers, corporate standards and local inspectors who will accept only the latter on hard-wired equipment. If that is your situation, ask us before you buy and we will take it up with BelAire in writing.

Freight and receiving

Shipped as palletised freight throughout the lower 48 states; the charge is quoted live at checkout against your real destination rather than estimated.

Receiving is on you, and it is easier if you decide how before the truck is booked. The carrier delivers to the back of the trailer only, so you want a forklift, a loading dock, or a pallet jack and level ground. If none of that exists at your site, choose terminal pickup. Home addresses count as residential deliveries and carry a residential fee — say so when you order.

And inspect it standing there. Damage found after a clean signature is your problem; damage written onto the bill of lading before you sign is the carrier’s.

Warranty

2 Year bumper-to-bumper factory warranty from BelAire, consumer and commercial, covering the whole machine with nothing extra to buy.

And the one piece of advice that keeps a claim straightforward: leave the pump together. A pump that has been taken apart cannot be assessed, because the sequence of failure is gone. Ring us with the symptom and let it be looked at whole.
