BelAire 318VE Elite Series 5 HP 80-Gallon Two-Stage Air Compressor, Vertical

Ask any compressor engineer what actually kills receivers and the answer is not pressure, it is water. The 318VE's Elite Series specification exists largely to take that failure mode out of your hands: it has an automatic, pressurised tank drain that empties condensate without anyone remembering to do it, and it has a low oil protection switch that stops the pump before a low level does damage. Two of the three jobs an owner is supposed to do daily are handled by the machine.

The rest is a solid stationary package: a 5 HP motor on 208-230V 1-Phase supply with a magnetic starter already fitted, a solid cast iron two-stage pump, stainless steel valves, a triple-pass pump-mounted aftercooler, and an 80-gallon vertical tank that BelAire states is 100% factory tested at full pressure.

The maintenance job nobody does, done for you

Compressing air condenses the moisture that was in it. That water collects at the bottom of the receiver, and on a machine with a manual drain the owner is expected to crack a valve open at the end of every working day to blow it out. Almost nobody does this for years on end.

The consequences are slow and then sudden. Standing water attacks the vessel from the inside, in the one place you cannot inspect. Wall thickness is lost where you cannot see it. Meanwhile the water level rises far enough that liquid starts carrying into the outlet and down your air lines, where it rusts tool internals, contaminates paint work and ruins the performance of any filter downstream.

The Elite Series drain on this model is automatic and pressurised: it uses the compressor's own tank pressure to expel the condensate rather than relying on you. BelAire is explicit that this is not an electronic timer solenoid — there is no controller to set and nothing to lose power. It is a mechanical arrangement doing the job you would otherwise have to remember. You should still glance at it periodically and confirm it is discharging, but you are checking a system rather than being the system.

Low oil protection: the other automatic safeguard

The second failure that ends compressors early is running the pump with insufficient oil. Splash-lubricated pumps depend entirely on the level in the crankcase; there is no oil pressure warning because there is no oil pressure. On many machines the sight glass is the only defence, and a sight glass only works if somebody looks at it.

This model carries a low oil switch that shuts the pump down before damage occurs. It does not replace checking the sight glass, which is fitted and easy to read, but it does mean an oversight becomes an inconvenience rather than a seized pump. On a machine that runs unattended in a corner of a shop, that difference is worth real money.

Vertical, single phase, and where it goes

The 80-gallon receiver stands upright, giving a footprint of roughly 39" by 24" instead of a long run along a wall, at 428 lbs. Measure your ceiling and any door header on the route in before ordering: our specification records the overall height at 77", and clearance is needed above that for the outlet fitting and the piping elbow. If your headroom is close, ask us to confirm the height in writing first.

Electrically it takes 208-230V single-phase supply, which is what makes it viable in buildings with no three-phase service. BelAire recommends a 40 amp breaker and lists the actual amp draw as something to confirm with a certified electrician, because the honest figure depends on your service, your conductor run and your local code. Having that verified before delivery is the customer's responsibility. The magnetic starter is included and factory fitted, so you are not buying one separately and the motor has proper overload protection from the first start.

Two-stage compression, and the aftercooler

A two-stage pump compresses in a large cylinder, cools the air, then compresses again in a smaller one. Compressing already-dense air is more efficient than reaching the same pressure in one jump, which is how a 5 HP motor supports a high working pressure without labouring — and a higher tank pressure means a bigger usable reserve at your regulated working pressure, so the motor starts less often.

The triple-pass aftercooler is mounted on the pump and drops the discharge air temperature before the air reaches the tank. Cooler air holds less moisture, so more of the water separates at the machine, where the automatic drain deals with it, and less of it travels down your pipework. The two features work as a pair, which is why they appear together on the Elite specification.

Perfect For

  • Shops with no three-phase supply that still want a two-stage machine rather than a single-stage compromise.
  • Anywhere the compressor lives out of sight — a plant room, a mezzanine, a back corner — where automatic draining stops being a convenience and starts being the reason the tank survives.
  • Tight floor plans with usable ceiling height, where a vertical tank fits and a horizontal one does not.
  • Owner-operator garages and small service shops that cannot spare somebody for daily compressor housekeeping.

One figure we are not publishing

We do not have a delivered-air rating for the 318VE that we are confident enough to print. The sources we hold state it inconsistently, and airflow is precisely the specification a buyer sizes a tool list against — getting it wrong by a few CFM can be the difference between a compressor that keeps up and one that does not. So we have left it off the page rather than publish a number we cannot stand behind. If delivered air at 100 PSI is decisive for you, ask and we will get it in writing from the manufacturer before you order. Everything else here comes from BelAire's own specification for this model.

Certification, honestly

The receiver is an ASME certified pressure vessel and BelAire states it is 100% factory tested at full pressure. Those are real, checkable claims and they concern the tank.

We do not hold a North American third-party electrical safety listing from an accredited testing laboratory for this compressor. That is a different document assessing the motor, starter and control wiring, and a pressure vessel certification does not stand in for it. Some insurers, some corporate facility policies and some local electrical inspectors require it by name. If that might be you, establish the requirement and ask us in writing before you buy rather than during an inspection.

Delivery

Ships as freight within the lower 48 states, quoted live at checkout against your own address.

You need a way to unload: a forklift or a dock at the delivery point, or take terminal pickup and collect it yourself. Residential delivery is available and carries a residential fee. This unit ships standing tall on a skid, so check for lean and tipping as well as dents in the tank ends, a distorted guard and oil on the deck. Write any damage onto the delivery paperwork and photograph it before the driver leaves, then sign. A clean signature makes a later claim very difficult.

Warranty

A 2-year factory warranty applies to this machine. Note the serial number when the crate comes off and keep it with your invoice.

Do not dismantle the pump, motor or pressure switch before a claim has been opened; taking a component apart to prove it failed is the surest way to lose the cover on that component. Report the fault first. Then follow the manufacturer's oil interval and belt tension checks, and confirm periodically that the automatic drain really is discharging — it does the work for you, but it is still worth watching.
